The first place to start is your own musical preferences. If you have a love of classical music for example, you will probably have a wider range of instruments to make your initial choice. There is a wise variety of stringed, woodwind, brass, percussion and keyboard instruments to choose from; all with a close affinity to classical music.
If folk music is your taste, then perhaps brass instruments would not be so appropriate. Some stringed instruments such as cellos would not suit the genre so well, but violin's and guitars might. There are also some instruments such as accordions which would suit a folk sound, whereas they would be out of place in a classical environment.
Rock music is a style more suited to amplified music, such as guitars and keyboards. Drums also fit well with this particular style, as do some brass instruments such as saxophones. Woodwind however would not seem quite right.
If you are looking to play with some friends, perhaps you could also be asking yourself which instrument would fit in best with the overall sound, rather than a personal preference. Once you have learned music and playing a particular instrument, a second instrument would not be so difficult to master.
